Sweet Sleep’s Help for Haiti
THE JANUARY 12, 2010 EARTHQUAKE CHANGED HAITI AND THE WORLD FOREVER. IT ALSO CHANGED SWEET SLEEP’S WORK IN HAITI.
More than 212,000 brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers and children lost their lives that day and the days following the disaster. Tragically, this added an estimated 760,000 orphans to the 380,000 children who were already orphaned prior to the quake. That’s more than 1 million orphans in this small country – about the size of Maryland.
Sweet Sleep began providing beds for Haiti’s orphans living in orphanages and children’s homes in 2008. At the time of the quake, Sweet Sleep responded immediately by holding bedding drives and sending more than 6,000 articles of emergency bedding – sheets, blankets and mats – as well as 2,000 new Bibles to orphans being cared for by our partners on the ground.
A month after the disaster, Sweet Sleep volunteers worked with indigenous staff in Haiti to provide beds for orphans who narrowly escaped being crushed when, while praying under a mango tree for their evening meal, their home collapsed during the quake.
Immediately after the disaster, our partners requested more than 4,000 beds. Sweet Sleep needs your help to provide these beds and to continue providing beds to the thousands of orphaned and abandoned children in Haiti for years to come. To provide beds for these children, click here.
