Current Uganda Orphanage Projects

The Need

Uganda is home to more than 4 million orphans. Most of Uganda’s orphans have been taken in by Christian churches or orphanages that do everything they can to care for these children. New laws in Uganda prohibit children in orphanages from sleeping on the floor or from sharing a bed with another child. As you can imagine, this is nearly impossible for those trying desperately to care for these 4 million orphans.

Sweet Sleep’s Work in Africa

Sweet Sleep has provided beds to two orphanages near the capital city of Kampala and to hundreds of orphans in Gulu, Uganda. These orphans are being resettled from their IDP camps into their home villages now that the 24-year-war in northern Uganda has come to an end. Sweet Sleep beds in orphanages and children’s homes in Uganda are typically metal bunk beds with thick, foam mattresses; vinyl mattress covers; crisp, new sheets; comfy blankets and life-saving mosquito nets. A complete Sweet Sleep bunk bed for two children, including a Bible, is just $250.

Orphans in Gulu are being resettled into huts in their home villages. These huts are only a few feet tall, so bed frames will not fit. Beds in Gulu consist of a straw mat to get the bed up off the floor, a comfy mattress, new linens, a soft blanket and a mosquito net. A Sweet Sleep Bed in Gulu, along with a Bible, is just $88.
